Interns working with One Earth Designs during spring and/or summer 2010 can apply to be stationed either in Massachusetts, U.S.A or in Qinghai, China. Applicants to China positions should expect to encounter temperatures down to -30ºC, altitudes from 2300-5000 m, and infrequent access to showers. For these applicants, experience working in rural areas (especially in W. China) and Mandarin language abilities will be beneficial. Female applicants to China positions must be prepared to work comfortably in male-dominated settings and to serve as an example of female leadership and achievement without forcing their ideas of women's rights on local community members.

In addition to our regular application process, we are also seeking interns to fill six key positions. These are briefly summarized below. If you wish to apply to these positions, please put the title of the position you are applying for in the subject line of your email.

Human Resources/Operations Intern
Goals: To help strengthen our organizational structure, develop a evaluation process, research and recommend best practices in these areas and to manage our applications process.

Qualifications: Candidates should have a demonstrated background in research and writing as well as prior experience in human resources management. Candidates with a background in not-for-profit organizations will receive priority.


Social Media and Marketing Intern
Goals: To help build our media and social media presence, to develop innovative strategies for getting out the word about our work, to benchmark our internal processes with industry standards, and to help us forge strategic partnerships and collaborations.

Qualifications: Candidates should have a demonstrated background in writing, public relations, and/or social media interactions, as well as prior experience using twitter and Facebook. Candidates with a background in international development will receive priority.

Environmental Science Education Intern
Goals: To develop and implement novel curricula that introduces primary and middle school children in nomadic Himalayan communities to environmental science concepts. These curricula should inspire children to become environmental stewards, to explore their surroundings with scientific curiosity, and to involve their family members in environmental management.

Qualifications: Candidates must have strong academic backgrounds or work history in environmental studies, science, or engineering as well as in teaching and developing lesson plans. Creativity, broad knowledge of fun science experiments, love of children, and passion for cultural exchange are advantageous. Comfort with sketching is also a plus (the intern might, for example, sketch an educational comic series and provide it to our graphic designers for illustration).

Graphic Design Intern
Goals: To assist in maintaining high standards of design in our print and online publications, including brochures, websites, stationery, presentations and educational books. Additionally, to provide graphic design support to our project teams as needed, including brainstorming on visual design for products in development.


Qualifications: Candidates must have a degree from or be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in graphic design or related disciplines with coursework in typography, layout and illustration, or equivalent professional experience. Prior experience as a designer or volunteer in non-profit organizations is preferred. Portfolio submission is required.

Product Design Intern
Goals: To assist our design teams in concept development, sketching and prototyping of green energy and environmental health products for rural communities in the Himalayan region that incorporate local materials and craft methods ranging from carpentry and metal work to weaving and couture.

Qualifications: Candidates must have a degree from or be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in industrial design, apparel design, architecture or other related disciplines, with a passion for socially-motivated design that is demonstrated by excellent prior work. Prior experience as a designer or volunteer in non-profit organizations is preferred. Portfolio submission is required.

Mechanical Engineering/Manufacturing Intern
Goals: To collaborate with the SolSource team and local communities to produce SolSource units in China. This position would include identifying appropriate supply chain and manufacturing partners, leading local training workshops, and developing/overseeing quality control protocols.

Qualifications: Candidates must have a background in mechanical engineering, preferably with prior experience in manufacturing. Extensive hands-on fabrication experience is highly preferred. Ability to speak Mandarin is advantageous.

ICT4D Intern
Goals: To improve our mobile- and computer-based data entry forms, develop curricula and teach IT classes, and work with other local organizations on collaborative IT projects.

Qualifications: Candidates must have a background in computer science, experience in creating and maintaining websites, experience using MS Word and Excel. Experience teaching and speaking Mandarin language is highly advantageous.
